GEORGES SEURAT (French Neo-Impressionist Painter)

Georges-Pierre Seurat was born December 2, 1859 in Paris, and began his art studies at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878. His fascination was caught by Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya, both of whom influenced his work. Seurat was a leader in Neo-Impressionism, which traded the large brush strokes of the Impressionists for tiny dots or short strokes of paint that became known as pointillism or divisionism. Using small points of color allowed the artist to play with and vary colors within the subject, creating a subtle shift of textures and light. Seurat's interest was in finding new ways to use color and line to control texture in paintings. Although pointillism necessarily takes much longer than other painting techniques, Seurat managed to create more than 500 paintings and drawings before he died.

Seurat was a meticulous artist, and once he was established, only finished one large painting a year. At the time of his death, he had seven such canvases, as well as 60 smaller paintings. He wintered in Paris and spent his summers on the north coast of France, and was known as a very private person. He died in 1891, at the tender age of 31.

Tips for Choosing Art Work for Your Home

When shopping for art for your living room, here are a few things to keep in mind before you buy an original painting, artist reproduction or a framed art print.

Choose an artwork piece that compliments the color scheme and mood of your rooms current decor.

If you room has a theme (i.e. modern, shabby chic, country or sophisticated) make sure the art print's theme and design you pick supports the same theme as you room.

With any artwork from expensive original artwork to an inexpensive art print, framing is an important step to have the art be appreciated and make a statement. Poorly framed art tends to look cheap and neglected no matter how much you spent.

And lastly, make sure your art pieces do not come into contact with direct sunlight without UV protective glass to protect the colors in your artwork from fading over time.
