ALBERT BIERSTADT (American Landscape Painter)

Albert Bierstadt was born in Germany in 1830 and arrived in the U.S. at the age of two. Returning to the land of his birth as a young adult, he studied painting for three years at the Dusseldorf Akademie, a renowned art school. Bierstadt returned to the United States in 1857 and started working in the northeast as a landscape painter.

But stories of the incredible beauty of the Western frontier caught his attention, and he resolved to see this wild land for himself. In 1858, he joined a surveying expedition headed west, where he created sketches and oils of the beautiful lands he saw there. At his studio in New York, he used his experiences of the West to form detailed sweeping panoramas of the western region of the country, covering landscapes as widely separated as California's Sierra Nevada range and the Rocky Mountains. Bierstadt's combination of dramatic form and unusual subject matter made him one of the best-known painters of the mid- 19th Century. He set the standard for the grand vistas people would come to associate with Western art, using a romantic style that emphasized the immensity if the mountains, lakes and waterfalls as well as the impact of clouds and fog on the views found throughout the West. His dramatic style and grand execution can be found in his work "Mountains in the Mist" (1863), which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Tips for Choosing Art Work for Your Home

When shopping for art for your living room, here are a few things to keep in mind before you buy an original painting, artist reproduction or a framed art print.

Choose an artwork piece that compliments the color scheme and mood of your rooms current decor.

If you room has a theme (i.e. modern, shabby chic, country or sophisticated) make sure the art print's theme and design you pick supports the same theme as you room.

With any artwork from expensive original artwork to an inexpensive art print, framing is an important step to have the art be appreciated and make a statement. Poorly framed art tends to look cheap and neglected no matter how much you spent.

And lastly, make sure your art pieces do not come into contact with direct sunlight without UV protective glass to protect the colors in your artwork from fading over time.
